Moreover, anyone in the "luxury" camp who puts their nose up at the fact that the Platinum is a coupon book doesn't have to have that component attached to their luxury perks. Then, in however many years, they can grow up and get the luxury product because they've been accustomed to it for however long now. That way, AMEX still is fulfilling their marketing strategy, by luring in young people with a card that gives value greater than the annual fee they're paying but only a taste of the true "premium" experience they can otherwise be having. Give the latter card all of the coupons and gimmicks, while the former should be strictly things that add convenience to your life - and make it way more expensive than it should be. The product with the unlimited lounge access should be for the "luxury" folks, and the other for the "value" folks. My genius idea? There should be two separate products: one with unlimited lounge access, and one with one or two lounge visits a year. If it economically made sense for everyone to get the card, then they will and nothing can stop that. If it's truly a luxury card, then cardholders should be paying a premium to have the card such that the value they're getting out of it is indeed lower than the annual fee. Regardless, the only way AMEX can fix this issue is to decide fully what the Platinum card should be. You'd think that most people in the world subscribe to the idea that having a specific credit card doesn't make you any better than anyone else - but yet, a lot of the sentiments in these threads is pretty vehement towards anyone who wants to get value out of their credit card through fully using its perks (which is so bizarre to me.) Every single week there's a handful of these threads made by someone who's pissed off that they don't get their lounge visit, and it's so tiring. The funny thing is, I don't think the "value" folks give a crap about the "luxury" folks at all. So long as their total usage is > $695, they'll keep holding the card and keep using it (and a part of that is going to the lounge.) The "value" category cares about min/max-ing the money they get out of paying for the Platinum card. I imagine that 99% of posts talking about either of those things was made by someone who wants the "luxury" Platinum card. airport lounge access, and concierge services. They want bigger and better services that make their lives easier for holding the card, i.e. The "luxury" category doesn't care about the credits & benefits that the card gives. Most of the people who make posts like these are in the "luxury" category, and everyone else is in the "value" category. The "luxury" folks, and then the "value" folks. ![]() It seems to me like there's two major camps with credit cards. ![]()
